Book Club Discussion Guide: The Book of Azrael

1. The Cycle: Eternal Enemies, Eternal Rebirth

Dianna keeps reincarnating to kill Samkiel, the Death god who destroyed her kingdom. What does this cycle represent—revenge, destiny, obsession, or something else? Can you break patterns that span lifetimes? What would it take to end a cycle you've repeated hundreds of times?

2. Memory Loss: Starting Over or Losing Yourself

Dianna is reborn without memories of her past lives. What does forgetting do—give you freedom or rob you of identity? Can you be the same person across incarnations? What makes you "you" if you don't remember who you were? Would you want to remember all your past lives?

3. The "World Ender" Title: Hero or Villain?

Dianna is called World Ender—is she protagonist or antagonist? From whose perspective is she the hero? How does Nicole blur the line between good and evil? Can someone be both destroyer and savior? What makes a character sympathetic despite terrible deeds?

4. Samkiel: Death God, Love Interest, Enemy [CW: enemies-to-lovers dynamics]

The Death god who destroyed Dianna's kingdom is presumably a love interest. How does Nicole handle this power dynamic? Can you love someone who killed your people? Is this enemies-to-lovers or something darker? What would forgiveness even look like here?

5. The Gods and Monsters Framework

This is book one of a series about immortal beings. How does Nicole build her mythology? What distinguishes gods from monsters in this world? Is it power, morality, or perspective? Which supernatural beings compel you most? What makes god/immortal stories work?

6. Power and Its Costs

Both Dianna and Samkiel wield enormous power. What does power cost them? Is being powerful enviable or burdensome? Can you have godlike abilities without becoming monstrous? What corrupts—power itself, or what people do to get it?

7. Redemption: Possible for Gods?

The book explores redemption for beings who've committed atrocities. Can gods be redeemed, or do their crimes transcend forgiveness? What would redemption require—remorse, penance, transformation? Is there such a thing as too far gone? Who decides?

8. The Kingdom's Destruction: Trauma Foundation

Dianna's entire motivation stems from her kingdom's destruction. How does Nicole portray this foundational trauma? Can you build identity entirely on loss and revenge? What happens when revenge is your only purpose? How do you move forward from catastrophic loss?

9. The Fast Pacing: Epic Scope, Quick Read

At 488 pages with fast pacing, this covers lifetimes quickly. Does the pace serve the epic scale or rush character development? What needed more time? When does fast-paced become too dense? How do you balance multiple timelines/lives with coherent storytelling?

10. BookTok Buzz: Why This One?

This is gaining traction on BookTok. What makes it appealing—the immortal romance, the epic fantasy, the enemies-to-lovers, or something else? How does it compare to other BookTok fantasy darlings? What's the appeal of god/immortal romances? What makes this stand out in crowded field?

11. Violence and Gore: Necessary or Excessive? [CW: violence, gore, torture]

Content warnings include significant violence and torture. How does Nicole handle graphic content? Is it integral to showing gods' brutality, or gratuitous? What's your tolerance for violence in fantasy? When does dark fantasy become too dark?

12. Destiny vs. Choice: Can You Change Fate?

If Dianna keeps reliving this cycle, is it destiny or choice? Can immortals have free will when patterns repeat eternally? What would break a destined cycle? How do you know if you're choosing or just fulfilling predetermined fate?

13. Series Starter: Setup vs. Standalone

This is book one with more coming. Does it work as standalone or only as setup? What questions need answering in future books? Are you invested enough to continue? What makes a first book satisfying while leaving you wanting more?

14. Amber V. Nicole as Rising Author

This is from a newer author gaining BookTok popularity. What makes debut/early authors exciting versus established names? What rough edges exist versus what shows promise? Would you follow this author's career? What would you want from future books in this series?
