Book Club Discussion Guide: We Were Liars

1. The Twist: When Did You Know? [CW: major spoilers inevitable]

This book lives and dies on its shocking twist ending. When did you figure it out? Were there enough clues or does it come from nowhere? Did the reveal devastate you or feel cheap? How does your opinion of the book change based on whether you saw it coming?

2. The Unreliable Narrator: Cadence's Memory

Cadence can't remember "Summer Fifteen" due to her accident. How does memory loss function as narrative device? Is she truly unreliable or deliberately lying to herself? What's the difference between forgotten and repressed? Can you trust a narrator who doesn't trust herself?

3. The Sinclair Family: Beautiful, Terrible Privilege

The wealthy Sinclair family owns a private island and maintains pristine appearances while dysfunction festers. How does Lockhart portray privilege? What's toxic about their brand of wealth—the money itself or what they do with it? Can you be sympathetic to rich people's problems?

4. The Liars: Cadence, Johnny, Mirren, Gat

The four cousins/family friends form the "Liars." What makes their bond special? How does their relationship function as found family within biological family? Which character did you connect with most? What does their group name "Liars" foreshadow?

5. Gat: The Outsider

Gat is Indian-American, not wealthy like the Sinclairs, and sees through their privilege. What role does he play—love interest, conscience, or both? How does the family treat him? What does dating Gat represent for Cadence—rebellion, genuine connection, or both?

6. The Sparse, Poetic Prose

Lockhart's writing is minimalist, almost fairy tale-like. How does the style work? Does the beautiful prose mask or reveal darkness? What's the relationship between the lyrical language and the brutal truth? Did the style enhance or distract from the story?

7. The Private Island: Paradise or Prison

Beechwood Island is beautiful, exclusive, and isolating. How does the setting function? What does private island ownership represent? Can you have genuine experiences in artificial paradise? What happens when you can't escape family?

8. Privilege and Guilt [CW: class, wealth]

The book explores whether privileged people can feel genuine pain or if wealth insulates from real suffering. What does Lockhart say about this? Can rich people's problems matter? What's the relationship between privilege and guilt? Should Cadence feel guilty for her advantages?

9. The Accident: What Really Happened [CW: trauma, violence]

The mysterious accident drives the entire plot. Without spoiling—how does Lockhart reveal what happened? Is the mystery sustained effectively or artificially? What makes a good mystery reveal in literary fiction versus thriller?

10. The Slow Burn Pacing: 242 Pages of Mystery

This is relatively short but slow-burning. Does the deliberate pace build tension or frustrate? What needed more development? When does withholding information create suspense versus feel manipulative? How does pacing affect the twist's impact?

11. BookTok "Emotional Damage" Phenomenon

This is famous on BookTok for devastating readers. Why do people recommend books specifically to hurt others? What's the appeal of emotionally brutal books? Does the shock value overshadow literary merit? Would you recommend this to someone just to see their reaction?

12. The Moral Questions: What Would You Do?

Without spoiling specifics, the characters make catastrophic choices. How do you judge their actions? What drives people to do terrible things for understandable reasons? Where's the line between mistake and unforgivable? What would you do in their position?

13. Rereading Potential: Does It Work Twice?

14. The Ending: Closure or Questions?

How did the resolution land? Did you get closure on characters and their fates? Is ambiguity satisfying here or frustrating? What would you need from the ending? What stays with you after finishing—the twist, the family dynamics, the guilt, or something else?
